One Hell of a Knight

Once again, Jason Walker renders a beautiful kit for CreatureScape readers.  This time it's "Hell Knight" from Bad Childhood Productions!

Well . . . being the first person shooter junkie that I am, I am quite familiar with this character, the terrifying Hell Knight from Doom 3.  This basically one piece kit, save the nameplate, is wonderfully sculpted by Paco Dietz of Bad Childhood Productions.  Ever since I saw his debut kit, "Becoming," I knew Paco would be dishing out some cool kits.

As usual, I start by priming the kit Gray to serve as a jumping of point for my sorta dead/Gray flesh color (right).  As of late I have fallen in love with sea sponges:  they don’t talk back and don’t need you to take them out for dinner and they do some really cool skin effects.  So I mix up some Flotrol, FW Flesh and a little Ceramcote Storm Gray, a drop of FW Emerald and sponge it around the kit (below left and right).  I keep adding more and more Flesh, White and Flotrol to the mix and sponge it on top of the last.   I kept doing this until I had about 4 or 5 different colors floating around his body (second row below left and right).

Now, after all that has dried and been sealed with some Dulcote, it is time to move on to highlighting and shading this big boy.  I take some of that last mix for sponging and add just plain FW White to it and some windshield wiper fluid to it so it flows through the airbrush better and begin hitting the highest point of his muscles and structure.  I repeat this step a few times adding more white each time until I like the way it is looking (right and below).

I seal it up and start mixing some of that last sponge mixture with some Ceramcote Nutmeg Brown, Flotrol and WW fluid.  This has to be pretty transparent and subtle, so I take it easy and dial down the Sotar's preset thingy….I don’t know what it’s called.  I spray this darker mix into all the deep areas and make a few spots here and there (right and below).

I then mixed in some Payne’s Gray and some more Flotrol and sprayed that into the deepest areas and feathered it out toward the rest.  I also went back with the last highlight mix and gently sprayed the whole kit to tie everything together (right).  I seal it once again and move on to the fun part.

For the exposed Red areas I went back again and took the final sponge mix and mixed it with a drop or two of FX Scarlet and very carefully sprayed that around the neck, face and gums (right).  I then make a wash out of Scarlet mixed with some Blue and brush it into the Red areas.  I then make a wash of Purple and do the same thing (first row below).  The teeth were based in an Ivory, highlighted with white and washed with some Games Workshop Flesh wash (second row below).  And that is basically it for the beast.

The base was based in Liquitex Red Oxide and then sprayed with FX Antelope Brown and Black.  The little skullcap nameplate holder was based with some Ivory, dry brushed with white and then given a heavy wash of GW Flesh wash (right and below).

I then sealed the kit for the last time.  When that had dried I took some Testors Burnt Metal and dry brushed the base.  The nameplate was based in black and then dry brushed with Burnt Metal and Steel.  I used some Tamiya Clear Red mixed with some Blue to write the word “Doom” and spatter some blood around.  I then finally sprayed some Tamiya Clear.  And that is it!

This kit provides a nice easy weekend project and looks great on the shelf when done.  Hats off to Paco for such a cool kit and to Sean for letting me bring it to you.

Back to the FPS for a second, if anyone is up for some Battlefield 2, let me know, I’ll pwn ya!
